NaNoWriMo Necessities

There are some things which you must have and you must do during NaNo.

The Writing Related Items You Need

bulletA Notebook or Legal Pad - For notes and ideas
bulletA Pen (or three) - I like to use glitter gel pens and buy a whole pack
bulletA computer, laptop or typewriter - You need a way to get your ideas in type written form. I prefer a computer because "copy and paste" are a huge help. But, you can participate with a typewriter. Paper and pen is possible, if necessary.
bulletReference Book - Dictionary, Thesaurus and Elements of Style are good reference materials. But, remember that you aren't going to edit, so don't get bogged down with a complicated style question. It can wait.
bulletMusic - The music you listen to can make a big difference in your work. I listen to Music Choice, Jazz stations while I write. I like the music and I do not know the words to most of the songs. Its amazing how lyrics used to get into my stories before I turned to Jazz.
bulletBuy something that will be your "NaNo" item. It can be gloves, a scarf, a teddy bear, a hat, anything. This item should be close by while you are writing. It can also be a signal to friends and family that you are working on NaNo and they need to leave you alone.

Food and the NaNo Competition

bulletFood preparation is critical for a successful NaNo competition.
bulletThis is the best month for lots of take out, delivered meals, frozen foods and your favorite junk food is a must.
bulletIf you have someone in the house who can cook for you, that is wonderful.
bulletI've found that cooking a huge pot of chili or a big pan of ziti is a great way to get through a few days.
bulletYour favorite junk food is a great reward and will also allow you to keep working at those critical times.
bulletFind the ingredients for your favorite easy to fix recipes or meals.
bulletExotic beverages can be a great asset or a wonderful treat. This can be a special coffee, an exotic fruit drink, a special smoothie or a mixed drink. The choice is yours. This is a great time to try unusual drinks. Our local Big Lots has the most unusual assortment of drinks, it never gets boring.
bulletVarious and plentiful snacks are critical. What is that saying - feed NaNo starve a work project? Just kidding. It is better to have snacks that won't stick to your fingers or you will need to clean the keyboard.
